Toronto General Hospital (TGH) has been named the second best hospital in the world in a global ranking from Newsweek magazine! This is one spot higher than the last two years and the highest ranking ever achieved by TGH or any Canadian hospitals. The ranking is based on recommendations by medical experts, hospital quality, patient experience, and patient outcomes.

2026 marks the 8th consecutive year that TGH ranks as the top publicly funded hospital in the world. As Dr. Kevin Smith, UHN’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “When you look down that list there are very few places in the world where you can say I can walk into a best-in-the-world hospital and it doesn’t matter if I’m one of the wealthiest people in that society or one of least advantaged people in the society, I will get the same care.”

Here are all the Toronto-area hospitals that rank among the Top 250:

  • #2 Toronto General Hospital - University Health Network
  • #27 Mount Sinai Hospital
  • #30 Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre
  • #67 North York General Hospital
  • #116 St. Michael’s Hospital - Unity Health Toronto
  • #128 Toronto Western Hospital - University Health Network
